The Hyper-Connected CFO: Positioning Finance as a Forward-Thinking Business Partner

The role of the CFO has changed forever. Bottom line growth alone no longer ensures success; driving top-line growth is equally important. Enterprises today face unprecedented threat (and opportunity) from digital disruption, data explosion, and heightened customer expectations. Because finance has an end-to-end view of the company and knows which value levers will drive sustainable growth, finance leaders have evolved from transactional to strategic. Their greatest area of potential strength is the ability to capture, structure and make better use of data. Emerging technologies across RPA, AI, smart analytics, and blockchain are helping finance leaders to free up time and find new ways of working that enables them to focus on more strategic challenges.

The dramatic shift in the role and expectations of finance leaders means that there needs to be a significant shift in the finance and accounting (F&A) operating model. Historically, many finance functions have been too reactive and focused on transaction processing. F&A in the late 1990s and early 2000s was all about cost-reduction – and of course regulatory compliance! The F&A services market exploded with the powerful labor-arbitrage opportunity where you could access the similar quality of talent at a significantly lower cost base. This was hugely attractive for the Global 2000 enterprises, but soon everyone realized that labor arbitrage was a one-time benefit. Both clients and their delivery arms (third-party service providers and shared services) started to wonder what else could be done. Some service delivery improvements were introduced, such as lean and six sigma, end-to-end process definitions and scope, technology augmentation through workflows and other bolt-on tools, and the rise of right-shoring. This improved client satisfaction, but many continue to declare a lack of innovation as a pet peeve. The watermelon effect is also widespread—the service levels are green, but the heart of process transformation is still flaming red!

The last couple of years have been characterized by the big, bold entry of emerging technologies in the F&A world. They promise to generate far more value with an even lower cost-base. But the big question continues to be unanswered…How do we get to this promised land? This is what we plan to discuss in the upcoming HFS Leadership roundtable in collaboration with Accenture.

The Hyper-Connected CFO | Agenda

The roundtable will focus on:

  • Objectives of a strategic finance function. Driving profitable growth, improving compliance, and real-time accounting – all at the same time.
  • Transforming the finance function by leveraging the power of data and new technologies.
  • Impact, adoption, associated challenges and real case examples of emerging technologies in F&A across the Triple-A Trifecta (Automation, Analytics, and AI), blockchain, and others.
  • Building a finance talent base, culture, and ecosystem.
  • Fostering innovation as well as predictability in today’s volatile, dynamic and uncertain man-machine world order.
